SMCS Annual Lecture

Each year the SMCS invite a prominent academic to deliver a lecture that combines academic vigour with broad appeal.

On the 6th of November 2018, the second such lecture will be held in the Kenworthy Hall at 2030. All members of the St Mary’s Community, including alumni and guests and the whole university community are invited to come along and hear our speaker, Professor Tom McLeish speak on the subject of, ‘The Rich Entanglement of Science and Religion, a Fresh Appraisal’.

Professor McLeish is a long-standing friend of the college and has recently departed Durham to take up a new position in the University of York. This second event follows on from the inaugural event on the 24th of October 2017, at which those present were graced by the words of Professor Nancy Cartwright, speaking on: ‘Policy and Evidence, why ‘what works’ does not work’.

The lecture proved to be insightful, prescient to our time and produced much thought in an audience that ranged from first year undergraduates to senior professors. To enable all members and indeed any other interested parties to benefit from this lecture, we recorded the whole event and it is available to see here.
