Officers’ Welcome

Welcome from the St Mary’s College Society Officers: Andy Hopkins, Timothy Hughes, and Sandra Ward

All three of us are committed to the success of the St Mary’s College Society (SMCS) and to its continuing development. Each of us thought carefully about the responsibilities we were taking on before standing for election to our current positions.

Durham City winds itself around the hearts of many students and the benefits and experience of College life has given us a lasting appreciation of our diverse student experiences. Hence a profound gratitude to Mary’s and a wish to give back via contributing to the Alumni Society. Our role is to represent alumni, link alumni with College and play a full role in the current college community, as we always have since our foundation in 1904.

We believe that a college is in a much healthier position when alumni are engaged, both to be of direct benefit to current students and also to represent the enduring interests of the college
experience. We see that SMCS has a huge amount to add to our college: our role is to open up opportunities to do so.

This website displays and explains what we do. From our role in the travel bursaries system, to providing a book fund and postgraduate bursary, to organising an annual reunion and producing a newsletter for alumni, we are busy and are always seeking new ways to support the college, students and our members. We welcome any and all contact from members, and particularly ideas for what we should be doing, or could do more of. We have, for example, a long-held ambition to hold reunion events away from Durham, which is something we think there is more demand and need for. And to build our use of social media to support our interactions with alumni.

With warmest wishes, whenever you were in college and wherever you are.

Andy Hopkins (Secretary),
Timothy Hughes (Treasurer), and
Sandra Ward (Acting President)
