Welcome to the St Mary’s College Society website. The Society is the alumni association for all graduates of St Mary’s College, University of Durham.

Students pay a subscription in their first year of their degree which entitles them to a lifetime membership of the Society. Upon graduation full membership is achieved.

What does the Society do?

The Society exists to both provide a focal point to maintain links between the College and the alumni body and to aid the contemporary college in providing an exceptional experience for students.

In support of these aims the Society offers support to students in the shape of the SMCS Book Fund, through Travel Bursaries, through a postgraduate bursary to support attendance at academic conferences, through subsidising selected college events and by being an active part of the college community.

The Society also continues the tradition of an annual reunion weekend, usually in September, which began in 1904 and enables graduates of all ages to reconnect with college and of course fellow Society members. There is also an annual newsletter, which in recent years has been supplemented with a Christmas edition, and which continues a tradition dating to 1908. This publication conveys news of the present day college, throws a spotlight on members’ lives and also focuses upon our shared history.

The Society also supports the college in organising events for alumni outside of Durham and in college.

At the centre of the Society is a hard working committee of volunteers who meet three times per year in college to maintain the various activities and offer support to college staff and students.
